The Ringstrasse (Ringstraße) is a circular road surrounding the inner city on the site of the city walls, which were demolished in 1857. Between 1865 and 1888, the monumental buildings were built in the historical style (known as Ringstraße style) along the street: Vienna State Opera, museums, Neue Burg, Burgtheater (or Imperial Court Theatre), Vienna Town Hall, Parliament, New University, Vienna Stock Exchange, Museum and Academy of Fine Arts. In between lie open spaces and parks. The financing of these buildings was largely made possible from the proceeds of the sale of fortifications and glacis defences
